Gutian Town is located in Tangtian village of Lyutian town, 113 km from downtown Guangzhou. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the town enjoys an exceptional ecological environment. The 4.1-km-long Niulan River is within its jurisdiction.

Beginning in Xitou village, Niulan River is a source of the mother river of Guangzhou, the Liuxi River. Jizhen Mountain, at an altitude of 1,175 meters, is the second highest peak in Guangzhou. From its peak visitors can overlook the Liuxi River Reservoir, the Guangdong (Guangzhou) Pumped Storage Power Plant, and Xitou village. The Yinggu route, a well-known rural hiking trail, is also in the featured town.

According to a 2017 plan, Gutian Town will become a 4A-level provincial rural compound to generate higher income for locals via access fee sharing, the rural stay business and rental and job opportunities, set on fulfilling the goals of "strong agriculture, beautiful villages and richer farmers".
