Sweet potatoes in Conghua in harvest
Dingkeng village of Aotou town in Conghua district of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, is welcoming a harvest of sweet potatoes in November.
The village started growing sweet potatoes in 2007, with its total potato-growing land reaching 1,000 mu (66.67 hectares). With superior ecological conditions and intensive management, its output stands at over 2,000 kilograms per mu.
Sweet potatoes are a staple food in China and have gained even more popularity in recent years as a health food. Their price has doubled several times, putting more money in the villagers' pockets. The premium quality of the sweet potatoes made them a hot item among purchasing vendors.
The sweet potato variety Dingkeng village mostly grows is nicknamed "yidianhong (a little red)". It has a silky sweet taste and thin skin. Its name comes from the fact that the core of the potato is a purplish-red color.
Sweet potatoes are mostly grown in Aotou, Lyutian and Liangkou towns in Conghua with a total planting area of 13,500 mu and an estimated output of 18,000 tons.
