As a renowned sweet bamboo shoots production base, Huangmao village is at its peak time for the harvest season of its sweet bamboo shoots.

The total planting area of sweet bamboo in Huangmao village, in Aotou town of Conghua district in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong province, is about 3,000 mu (200 hectares). The harvest period is from early June through till early October, with July, August and September being the prime harvesting time.

Every household in the village grows sweet bamboo shoots,  and during the harvest season, villagers start cutting job as early as 6am, with each person accomplishing around 250 kilograms per day.

According to Zhang Yinke, one of the early growers, he started growing sweet bamboo shoots in 1998 as part of a poverty-alleviation project. At that time villagers were encouraged to grow sweet bamboo shoots by getting the seedlings for free, as well as with subsidies. Later on, when the growing business generated more profit, villagers began to grow the sweet bamboo shoots on a large scale.

With the later establishment of the sweet bamboo shoots professional cooperative in the village in 2008, villagers' enthusiasm for growing sweet bamboo shoots were greatly stimulated. The total output this year is estimated to be 500,000 kilograms.

The cooperative has expanded from 25 members, at its very beginning, to over 100 members now. Inspired by Huangmao village, neighboring villages have also started growing sweet bamboo shoots, constituting an additional 2,000 mu. Huangmao village was also awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture as a demonstration village for developing signature products, in 2012.

Till now, Huangmao village has developed an industrial chain of sweet bamboo shoots planting, procurement, processing and rural tourism, which is leading the village to common prosperity.
