Apart from the regular seasonal fruits for autumn like grapes and oranges, Conghua district of Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong province, is also embracing the harvest of canarium pimela, which is also called the Chinese black olive.

Sanbaidong village in Taiping town of Conghua is a major planting area for canarium pimela, with an annual output of about 150,000 kilograms. Almost every household in the village grows the fruit. which brings a significant increase of income to the villagers.

Around the middle of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar is the maturing time for canarium pimela. The fruit will turn from green to purple  and then to deep black, ready to be picked.

The 2-3 centimeter fruit has high value inside and out. The raw flesh tastes a bit bitter, so it is usually marinated in warm water with spices to elevate its taste. It is also made into Lam Angle or Lam Angle sauce, a typical ingredient for Cantonese dishes.
