Orchids prosper in Conghua
A diverse display of orchids attracted lots of attention at the first Guangzhou International (Liuxi) Flower Expo that was recently held in Conghua.
The superior natural environment in Conghua district of Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong province has given orchids a favorable home to grow in.
As a kind of Cymbidium sinense, Sikangdie was first discovered in Conghua in 1991 and has won multiple awards at orchid expos, which is a reflection of decades of efforts by Conghua people to grow the best orchids.
As an original variety from Conghua that boasts both economic and cultural value, Sikangdie encouraged Conghua to cultivate orchid resources and develop the business into an industry.
Now, orchid businesses can be seen in various townships and villages in the district. There are over 100 varieties with an annual output value of more than 100 million yuan ($15.64 million). The flourishing of the industry has greatly reduced the flower's price and made orchids affordable by the general public.
After almost 30 years of development, the orchid industry in Conghua is still thriving. Wild orchids are also flourishing here. The fact that orchids are very particular about their growing environment is a manifestation of Conghua's achievements in environmental and biodiversity protection.
