Cantonese Opera mask show opens in Tianhe
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cantonese Opera master Hung Sin-nui, the most comprehensive and large-scale exhibition dedicated to Cantonese Opera facial masks is now on view at Hall 2 and Hall 3, the calligraphy gallery, Guangzhou Cultural and Arts Center, until Oct 29.
The exhibition features a collection of 200 crafted facial masks by Feng Hanhua, a representative inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage item. The collection features 100 newly created masks alongside 100 classic pieces previously included in the Compendium of Cantonese Opera Performing Arts.
As an iconic symbol of Cantonese Opera, the facial masks utilize expressive and exaggerated artistic techniques. A unique color language, including red for loyalty, purple for filial piety, black for righteousness, and white for treachery, combined with dynamic lines and figurative patterns, vividly portrays the personality and destiny of each character.
