Tianhe's GDP tops city for 14 consecutive years

The regional GDP of Tianhe district in Guangzhou reached 531.28 billion yuan ($83.04 billion) by the end of 2020, and has topped the city for 14 consecutive years, according to the first session of the 10th Tianhe District People's Congress that kicked off on Oct 27.

The added value of the financial industry in Tianhe exceeded 100 billion yuan in 2020, and the revenue of software enterprises above designated size totaled 189.1 billion yuan, accounting for half of the city's total.

An industrial enterprise above designated size refers to one that has an annual operation revenue surpassing 20 million yuan.

The district had a total of 460,000 enterprises by the end of 2020. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), it had 34 newly listed companies and 250 projects invested by Fortune Global 500 companies.

There were 2,995 national high-tech enterprises in the district by 2020, ranking first in Guangzhou. The number of patent applications and grants during the past five years reached 51,000 and 27,000, respectively, with the sum topping the city for 18 consecutive years.

The Tianhe Intelligence Business District was recognized as a provincial-level high-tech zone, and 105 enterprises were newly added with a total of registered capital exceeding 100 million yuan during the 2016-20 period.

The first Hong Kong and Macao Youth Home has been established in Tianhe over the past five years, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangdong) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Incubator Base has been put into use.

Tianhe's friendship districts or cities had totaled 13 in 2020. There were 3,572 new foreign funded projects from 2016 to 2020 in the district, and the value of actually utilized foreign capital totaled $3.49 billion.

It had created new jobs for more than 343,000 people in the past five years, and lifted all the poverty-stricken counties, villages and households that it had been offering paired assistance to out of poverty.

Goals were also set for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25). Its GDP will surpass 700 billion yuan by the end of 2025 with an average annual growth rate of around 6 percent while the added value of its financial industry will exceed 150 billion yuan.
