Tianhe's village becomes national folk culture, art hometown

Chebei village in Guangzhou's Tianhe district recently made the list of folk culture and art hometowns for the 2021-23 period for its distinct dragon boat racing tradition. The honorary title was awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Chebei village was founded in the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, and Chebei dragon boat racing boasts a history of more than 150 years.

In ancient times, dragon boats from surrounding areas came to Chebei for the Dragon Boat Festival. Nowadays, Chebei dragon boat activities have developed into an international cultural festival and have become a cultural brand in Tianhe district.

In 2017, Chebei dragon boat racing was included in the sixth batch of city-level intangible cultural heritage items in Guangzhou.
