Tianhe district in Guangzhou ranked second among the top 100 Chinese districts this year, only second to Shenzhen's Nanshan district, a report from CCID Consulting said on Aug 17. It is the fifth consecutive year that the district has been included in the ranking.

Directly affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, CCID Consulting analyzed the districts in China according to five dimensions – economic power, growth momentum, internal support ability, regional function and shared development.

The study, which excluded municipalities as well as the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, assessed 906 districts in prefecture-level cities, requiring a regional GDP exceeding 80 billion yuan ($12.34 billion), and revenue in the general public budget of over 2 billion yuan.

By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the regional gross domestic product (GDP) of Tianhe reached 531.3 billion yuan, ranking first in Guangzhou for 14 consecutive years and accounts for 21.2 percent of the city's GDP.

In 2020, the added value of the modern service industry in Tianhe accounted for 70 percent of the district's GDP while that of the financial industry exceeded 100 billion yuan. The annual operating revenue of the software industry above designated size doubled from that in 2015, and the number of national high-tech enterprises increased 5.4 times compared to that in 2015.

The per capita disposable income of the district's urban residents in 2020 was 79,000 yuan, making it the "happiest city in China."
