Passenger throughput at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport rebounded in July, which is the usual peak period for air travel, according to a statement released by the airport authority on Friday.

The passenger volume of domestic flights has come back to nearly 90 percent of what it was in the same period last year, the statement said.

The airport in Guangdong province, one of the three busiest on the Chinese mainland, handled more than 965,800 passengers from July 17 to 23, with 7,965 flights taking off or landing at the airport.

On Thursday alone, the airport handled more than 144,200 passengers, a record high for a single day since the coronavirus outbreak, the statement said.

The number of passengers flying to and from Guangzhou will continue to grow in the weeks to come, it said.

The growing number of domestic flights has helped maintain the airport's pattern of growth, the statement said.

Currently, popular domestic flights to and from Guangzhou include Yinchuan, in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region; Xi'an, Shaanxi province; Chengdu, Sichuan province; Sanya and Haikou, Hainan province; Lijiang, Yunnan province; Hangzhou, Zhejiang province; and Shanghai.

The airport recently increased domestic flights to and from major tourist destinations, including Shiyan in Hubei province, Dunhuang and Jiayuguan in Gansu province, Zhaotong in Yunnan province and Xinyang in Henan province, to help meet growing demand for sightseeing, the statement said.

The airport has promised to provide better services to serve the growing number of passengers in the weeks ahead, the statement said.
