'Science for Young' event inspires young people in Guangzhou

"Science for Young", an outreach event of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2024 for the purpose of promoting scientific knowledge among students, was held in Guangzhou on Nov 18.

Barry Marshall, an Australian scientist and the Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, and Efim Zelmanov, Russian mathematician and Fields Medal winner, held talks and exchanges with local students and young scholars to foster a passion for science among the youth.

At Guangdong Guangya High School's Liwan campus, Marshall shared his groundbreaking research with students and discussed the journey of translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications. He encouraged students to embrace challenges and pursue their genuine interests, emphasizing that passion is key to achieving success in any field.

At Guangzhou Foreign Language School, Zelmanov captivated students with the "beauty of mathematics". He highlighted the critical role of basic education in lifelong learning and career development, saying that mathematics, as a fundamental discipline, has always been a crucial driver of technological advancement.

The "Science for Young" event aimed to build bridges between leading scientists and the younger generation, enhancing the scientific culture in the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It was designed to ignite curiosity and admiration for science among young people in the three regions.
