Construction on the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway's shield tunnel has reached new progress, local media outlets reported on Oct 9.
The "Tiebing Nansha No 2" shield tunneling machine has started excavation work at Wanqingsha Station, marking the beginning of construction on the left-line shield tunnel from Shichong Station to Wanqingsha Station. The construction of this shield tunnel is crucial to the success of the project.
The geological conditions in this section are complex, with shallow overburdened soil, weak and muddy layers, highly viscous clay, and water-rich sand layers. These conditions increase the technical parameters of shield tunnel excavation work.
The "Tiebing Nansha No 1" machine, which is responsible for tunneling the right-line of this section, began its excavation work on June 30 and has since completed 297.6 meters of work.
Upon completion, the railway will cut travel time from Zhongshan's Qijiang New City to Guangzhou's Zhujiang New City to just 45 minutes. This will further improve the rail transit network on the west bank of the Pearl River.
