Five Shiziyang Channel sci-tech projects have passed evaluations by the Guangdong Provincial Communication Group, laying foundations for the next phase of research, local media outlets reported on Feb 21.

Lying between Nansha Bridge and Humen Bridge, the Shiziyang Channel is expected to connect the Nansha area of the Guangdong (China) Pilot Free Trade Zone with Dongguan's Binhai Bay.

Once completed, it will be the world's largest double-decker suspension bridge, as well as the first double-decker bridge that crosses the Pearl River. It will have a span of about 15.35 kilometers upon its completion.

The channel will adopt the technical standards of a dual eight-lane expressway, with a designated speed of 100 km per hour. It is planned to be completed and opened to traffic in 2028.

This strategic channel is a part of Guangzhou's efforts to become a national comprehensive transportation hub. It is expected that the channel will become one of the landmarks in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and will push forward the rapid development of the Greater Bay Area.
