Wanlong Bridge, a self-anchored suspension bridge that will connect Wanqingsha and Longxue Island, started construction in Guangzhou's Nansha district on Dec 15.
The project is located in Nansha's Wanqingsha town, and is designed to be an urban trunk road with an overall southwest-northeast direction. It will start from Wanxin Avenue in the west and then intersect with Wanlong East Road in the east.
With a total length of about 5.15 kilometers, and is designed to have six lanes going in each direction and a designated speed of 60 km per hour. The bridge's main span is designed to be 608 meters in length, which will be the largest span among the world's self-anchored suspension bridges.
Its 130-meter-tall main towers will be the first to use ultra-high elliptical steel cable structure systems, to make them look like two round moons hanging over the waterway. Once construction is completed, the bridge will be a new green ecological tourism landmark in Nansha.
The project's total construction period will be 48 months and its main road is expected to be opened to traffic in October 2026. Upon its completion, it will be a contribution to the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
