The reconstruction and expansion project of the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway's Nansha-Zhuhai section is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, local media outlets reported on Nov 28.
As the first expressway connecting the mainland to Macao, the Nansha-Zhuhai section was built and opened to the public in December 1999. With the rapid growth in traffic volume, it is urgent that improvements are made to satisfy current demands.
Featuring a length of about 50.43 kilometers, this reconstruction and expansion project is designed to build 10 interchanges as well as one service area to improve the expressway's traffic capacity and service level.
Upon its completion, it will effectively strengthen the transportation links between Guangzhou's Nansha district, Zhongshan and Zhuhai. It will also complete a one-hour rail transit circle in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
