Hengli Island, located in the Pearl Bay of Guangzhou's Nansha district, was among the winners of the 2021 Global Future Design Awards, local media outlets reported on Dec 21.
The Global Future Design Awards is an international award created by APR, a global leading body of architecture press, to recognize outstanding design works in a wide range of fields spanning architecture and interior design.
Nansha's project, which is still in the design concept stage, was the only Chinese project chosen in any of the three categories and is the only one of its kind to win the award. It is being jointly built by the administrative committee of the Pearl Bay and Arup, a world-class design firm.
The project includes the integration of original landscapes and natural characteristics, the realization of consulting services in the design process, and the overall planning of the intention and expression of various design units, according to Peng Shi, deputy director of the technical management office of the Pearl Bay authority.
The design of Hengli Island incorporates local ecological and cultural characteristics, and combines local resources to provide a reading cafe and create a habitat for birds and aquatic creatures.
