The Guangdong team beat the Shanghai team 12-8 to claim the men's water polo championship at the 14th National Games in Shaanxi's Baoji on Sept 14. The last time the Guangdong team won the championship was eight years ago.

Two of the Guangdong players, Zhang Chufeng and Chen Zhongxian, are from Guangzhou's Nansha district.

Zhang was born in Dajing village, Huangge town, and Chen was born in Taiyangsheng village, Hengli town.

"Zhang was selected by his PE teacher in primary school for the swimming team and then he started playing water polo," said Zhang's father.

Zhang has participated in the National Games four times and has won three gold medals and one silver medal.

"The day that they won the gold medal is also Zhang's birthday on lunar calendar. Our whole family is so proud of him," Zhang's father added.

"This is the first time that Chen has won the National Games championship. All his hard work finally paid off and we were all proud of him," said Chen's father.
