An abandoned quarry in the southwest of Huangshanlu Forest Park in Guangzhou's Nansha district will be turned into a wetland park where locals can relax, local media outlets reported on June 30.

Facilities such as pavilions and waterfront platforms will be available in the park, which will be planted with flame trees, rose apple trees and jacarandas.

The area used to have no ditches to drain water away. Therefore, the torrential runoff from the mountain nearby often caused flooding, affecting the lives of local residents.

The construction of the wetland park has been divided into 11 parts. Nine of them have started construction.

Seven of these areas, including the main structure of the two lakes and the wooden sightseeing platforms, have been basically finished. Other facilities such as the grassland and corridors are expected to finish construction by the end of the year.

An official from Nansha construction center said that the drainage capacity of areas near Huangshanlu Forest Park was proved during the recent heavy rains, effectively ensuring the lives of local residents and the security of their property.
