Both the 21th Guangzhou Expo of New Vegetable Varieties and the third Guangzhou Nansha (International) Expo of New Vegetable Varieties commenced on May 25 at the headquarters of Guangzhou Institute of Agricultural Science in Nansha district.

A total of 1,172 new varieties of vegetables were on display during the event, which had an overall exhibition area of 300 mu (20 hectares). Seed industry merchants and farmers from all over the country gathered to get a closer look at the new varieties.

A person in charge of the Guangzhou Institute of Agricultural Science said that the number of new bitter gourd varieties was 286, with 30 of those varieties recommended by experts, both figures setting a historical high.

These new bitter gourds have beautiful colors, uniform shapes and outstanding features such as disease resistance and high yielding capacity.

A special area showcasing a solution for people to plant vegetables in urban areas was set up at the event, allowing people to learn more about key technologies such as the varieties suitable for plantation, plantation models, techniques and the recycling of agricultural waste.
