Nansha-based Guangzhou Shipyard International signed a contract with a fishery company based in Guangdong's Yangjiang on May 8 to build an 80-meter-long semi-submersible deep-sea intelligent breeding and tourism platform.
After beginning operations, the platform will be stationed in the surrounding waters of Hailing Island in Yangjiang and will be the first of its kind in Guangdong province for commercial use. It will be used for the aquiculture of high value-added fish species such as grouper, golden pomfret and cobio.
It will also be built into a base featuring other functions such as marine science promotion, scuba diving, surfing, angling and sea rescue.
"After it begins operations, the earnings from marine tourism will increase markedly to more than 30 percent of the company's total. The platform is expected to be launched in December this year," said Ge Yinqi, chairman of the Yangjiang company that owns the platform.
