The site selection of the Nansha branch of the Affiliated Cancer Hospital and the Institute of Guangzhou Medical University has been published on the official website of the Guangzhou municipal planning and natural resources bureau, local media outlets reported on Jan 27.
The hospital will be built to the north of Shisichong in Nansha's Wanqingsha town, west of Wanxin Avenue.
Nansha district signed the cooperation contract with Guangzhou Medical University in November 2019, pledging to work together to turn Nansha into a center for cancer medicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and to promote the integrated development of medicine, industry, academies and research.
The project will cover a total area of 100 mu (6.67 hectares) and will be able to provide 1,000 patient beds. The first phase of the project will be a cancer medical center with a floorage of 87,000 square meters, offering 5,000 patient beds.
It will be built according to the standards for national 3A-grade cancer hospitals and the regional oncology specialized medical centers at the national level to provide high-quality medical services for patients. A proton therapy center will also be available in the hospital.
The hospital, featuring precision medicine and proton radiation therapy, will establish four platforms, each for high-end precision medicine, precise radiotherapy and minimally-invasive cancer treatment, as well as clinical research and integrated innovation.
It is expected to give full play to expert teams from the Affiliated Cancer Hospital and Institute of Guangzhou Medical University in areas such as immunology, genome therapy and radiotherapy, and to carry out cutting-edge research into new technologies and methods with the aim of better serving patients from all over the world.
Nansha is set to invest more than 2 billion yuan ($308.63 million) in pushing forward the construction of medical and health facilities in 2021, officials from the Nansha health bureau said.
