Construction started on the east tower of the Hongqimen Mega Bridge on the Nansha-Zhongshan Expressway in Guangzhou's Nansha district on Oct 27, marking the official start of the construction of the Nansha-Zhongshan Expressway.

With an investment of more than 20 billion yuan ($2.98 billion), the Nansha-Zhongshan Expressway is the biggest new expressway project in terms of its investment amount that has started construction in Guangdong province this year.

The expressway stretches about 32.4 kilometers, connecting Nansha, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Shenzhen. Its construction is expected to be finished by 2024, becoming a major channel connecting core areas in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It has been designed to be a two-way six-lane expressway with three independent mega bridges and 41 bridges. The Hongqimen Mega Bridge is the most difficult one in its construction, with the highest demands in environmental protection on the expressway.
