An exhibition of achievements in artificial intelligence (AI) was held by the Guangzhou International Institute of AI in Nansha district on Aug 20, with a dozen in-house enterprises displaying nearly 100 AI-based products and solutions.

Guangzhou Mecart Sensor Technology Co Ltd, Guangzhou Ingsens Sensor Technology Co Ltd and the Guangzhou International Institute of AI signed a cooperation agreement on the application of AI molecular identification and sensing technology in portable environment-monitoring equipment.

Meanwhile, a strategic school-enterprise cooperation agreement was inked between the institute and Lingnan Normal University to apply the experience generated from frontline practices and exploration to the cultivation of talent in emerging engineering disciplines.

To date, the institute has housed 23 AI teams engaged in chip design, AI computing power, smart cities, medical treatment, robot manufacturing and language processing. The team members include two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and two IEEE Fellows. Many of them are seasoned experts who once worked for prestigious institutions and enterprises such as Microsoft Research Asia, Huawei and Amazon.

The institute, which began operations in December 2017, has increased the reputation of Nansha in the global AI sector through the hosting of the 2017 Guangzhou AI Roundtable Conference, the 2018 Guangzhou AI Work Exchange Conference and the 2019 AI China (Guangdong) International Summit.

It is expected that the annual output value of the institute will exceed 1 billion yuan ($145 million) by the end of this year, according to Tian Suning, president of the Guangzhou International Institute of AI.
