Ground broken on 5.8km greenway around Nanhu Lake

Updated : January 28, 2026

A 5.8-kilometer greenway project around Nanhu Lake in Tonghe Street, Baiyun district, has commenced construction.

Nanhu Lake, originally known as Modaokeng Reservoir, was built in 1956. It is a small reservoir serving multiple functions including flood control, water supply, ecological regulation, and landscape enhancement. It serves as an important ecological landmark for Baiyun district and even Guangzhou city, as well as a carrier of emotional memories for generations of citizens.

Aimed at connecting previously fragmented waterfront spaces and high-quality cultural tourism resources, the project addresses the long-standing issue of public access to the lakeside.

The plan includes building two pedestrian landscape bridges, creating seven scenic nodes, four service stations, and three parking buildings, while also upgrading surrounding roads. Adhering to an ecological and culturally integrated design philosophy, the project will preserve the natural landscape and ensure seamless connectivity with the city's transportation network.

Scheduled for completion by May 2027, the greenway will connect with natural resources like Baiyun Mountain and Liupian Mountain, forming an ecological and cultural corridor.

Upon completion, it is set to become a high-quality urban green space integrating ecology, leisure, and tourism, boosting the district's development potential.
