Guangzhou gymnasium hosts 1st para sports event
The wheelchair basketball test event for the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympics took place on Aug 21 at Guangzhou Gymnasium, marking the first time since the venue's establishment in 2001 that it has hosted a sports event for athletes with disabilities.
The competition comprehensively evaluated the event's operational systems and achieved a groundbreaking milestone: the first-ever 3x3 wheelchair basketball match in the history of the Paralympics.
The 3x3 format lowers participation barriers, with each team consisting of three players, with a total disability classification score not exceeding 8.5 points. The games are fast-paced and highly competitive, featuring a 10-minute time limit or immediate victory upon scoring 21 points.

During the test event, the men's teams engaged in intense matches, while the women's teams held a 5x5 exhibition game, with top athletes like Lin Suiling demonstrating exceptional skills. The award ceremony included a symbolic "net-cutting" ritual, where the hoop was lowered to wheelchair height, representing equality and inclusion.
Wang Zhengquan, a member of the national wheelchair basketball team, praised the well-equipped venue and noted that the 3x3 format demands higher physical and tactical prowess.
The Guangzhou Gymnasium has undergone upgrades to its accessibility facilities in preparation for the wheelchair basketball events at the National Paralympic Games this December.
