Explore rich avian diversity in Baiyun
With its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes, Baiyun district has become a haven for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts. From forested mountain slopes to tranquil lakeshores, the area offers countless opportunities to capture rare and beautiful bird species in their natural habitats.
Known for its abundant plant and animal life, Baiyun Mountain is home to the Mingchun Valley scenic area — often referred to as China's largest "natural birdcage". Situated near the mountain's summit, this area hosts more than 150 bird species, including over 500 rare birds, such as the Hemixos castanonotus and the Silver Pheasant (Lophura nycthemera). Every autumn, from September to November, areas like Ziji Mountain and Longhu Ridge also become key observation points for migrating raptors.
Boasting a forest coverage rate of over 95 percent, Maofeng Mountain offers a thriving ecosystem where visitors may encounter nationally protected birds like the Silver Pheasant and the Asian Barred Owlet (Glaucidium cuculoides).
