Vitalized Shakeng stream brings Baiyun down memory lane
The Shakeng stream in Baiyun district has emerged as a nostalgic sanctuary, evoking childhood memories of fishing and shrimp-catching.
Located in the northern part of Guangzhou, the stream originates from Dayuan cave in Taihe town and flows through a 19.83-kilometer stretch before merging with the Liuxi River.
Over the past year, the Baiyun Water Authority has executed extensive restoration efforts along the Shakeng stream, from Gaoqiao West Road to the Shihu Toll Station. These efforts include reinforcing embankments, repairing riverbanks, and upgrading drainage systems and weirs, all while preserving the stream's natural form and ensuring flood safety.
The project has vitalized a 3-km section of the stream, expanding its width from 17 meters to approximately 35 meters. A 5.6-km pedestrian pathway has been constructed along both banks, and a new pumping station along with two agricultural bridges have been added. The project is now complete and pending final inspection.
The vitalized Shakeng stream offers a serene environment with clear waters, lush greenery, and scenic beauty. The banks are adorned with diverse plant life, covering an area of 45,000 square meters. This not only enhances the ecological environment but also provides habitats for wildlife.
Residents can now enjoy a peaceful riverside space ideal for leisurely walks, relaxation, and photography, rekindling the simple pleasures of their youth.
