Situated in the north-central part of Guangzhou, Baiyun district covers a total area of 795.79 square kilometers. It borders Zengcheng district, Huangpu district and Tianhe district on the east, Nanhai district of Foshan on the west, Huadu district and Conghua district on the north and Liwan district and Yuexiu district on the south. In 2020, the district achieved a total output value of 224.51 billion yuan ($34.83 billion), the population of permanent residents amounted to 3.94 million and the registered population was 1.13 million.

Baiyun has 20 sub-districts, four towns, 284 neighborhood committees and 118 village committees under its administrative jurisdiction. It is a district with the largest area and the largest permanent population in the central urban area of Guangzhou.

The district has implemented strategies of the Guangzhou municipal government to build the city into an international shipping hub, an international aviation hub and an international science, technology and innovation hub.

It has several renowned universities, such as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, the Southern Medical University and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, as well as high-end industries, capital, talents and technology. The spatial layout and regional functions are under constant improvement.

Located south of the Tropic of Cancer, Baiyun enjoys a subtropical oceanic climate which features abundant sunshine and rainfalls. The annual average temperature is 21.8 degrees and the annual average rainfall is 1,694 millimeters.

The district is home to various landforms. Its eastern and northeastern areas are hilly terrains covered with lush thickets of trees and fruit plants and dotted with reservoirs and ponds. Maofeng Mountain and Baiyun Mountain Scenic Spot are famous attractions.

The central area of Baiyun belongs to the Guanghua Plain and the western area is part of the Pearl River system. This includes the Bajiang River and the Liuxi River, which is the main source of drinking water for Guangzhou citizens. Rich water resources enable the district to develop agriculture and shipping.

The tertiary industry in Baiyun is characterized by commerce, real estate, transport, catering services, finance and insurance. The district boasts several large-scale business hubs such as the New Guangzhou-Conghua Road cuisine corridor, the wholesale market at Zengcha Road and the auto-parts and decoration materials wholesale market at Huangshi Road.

Baiyun is home to more than 260,000 Chinese with foreign nationalities coming from over 50 countries and regions such as Singapore, Canada, the United States and European nations. Over 80,000 fellows have been staying in Hong Kong and the Macao special administrative regions. They care about the development of Baiyun and made huge investment to support the district’s medical, educational and industrial sectors.
