Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

Introduction

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, established in the 1930s and relocated in 2004, is one of the three major aviation hubs in China, a core aviation hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and a significant international aviation hub. The airport’s airlines cover more than 230 international destinations, enabling travel from Guangzhou to a domestic city or a major Southeast Asian city within four hours, and a major overseas city within 12 hours.

With continuous facility upgrading and service improvement over the years, the airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity exceeded 73 million in 2019, and its aircraft takeoffs and landings reached 500,000 in the same year. In 2020, despite the stagnant airline business brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity surpassed 43.77  million and its aircraft takeoffs and landings reached 373,000, making it an airport with the fastest recovery and the largest passenger flow in the world. In 2020, it ranked first among 348 airports worldwide in an airport service quality assessment launched by the Airports Council International (ACI) World.

Advantages

Guangzhou is the largest import and export hub and an important transport intersection in South China. With its unique geographical location and structured transportation system, the airport connects major cities in China, Southeast Asia, Europe, America, and Australia. Baiyun International Airport plans to build itself into a comprehensive transport center and transfer hub integrating various transportation means including air transportation, high-speed railway, subway, intercity rail transit and highway to link cities in the Pan-Pearl River Delta and the Pearl River Delta Area. Together with Guangzhou Port and Nansha Free Trade Zone, it will play a more important role in the Belt and Road Initiative, construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the big structure of a new round of opening-up.

Facilities

The airport has two terminals, three runways and 269 standard aprons (including FBO). Terminal 1 covers a construction area of over 500,000 square meters, and Terminal 2 and the Integrated Transportation Center have an area of more than 800,000 square meters. Currently, the two terminals are able to handle an 80 million annual passenger throughput. Line 3 of Guangzhou Subway, urban and long-distance buses, taxi and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway are connected to the transportation center, providing passengers with various means of transportation. In September 2020, the third phase project of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was officially started.

Passenger throughput

In 2004, the passenger throughput of the airport exceeded 20 million in the year of relocation. Since then, the figure has grown rapidly with a net increase of 10 million passengers every three years. The throughput exceeded 30 million in 2007, 40 million in 2010, 50 million in 2013, 65 million in 2017 and 73 million in 2019. In 2020, despite the stagnant airline business brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity surpassed 43.77 million.

Routes

At present, Baiyun International Airport is the base airport for China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, 9 Air, China Central Longhao Airlines and Zhejiang Loong Airlines. It has established business partnerships with about 80 domestic and foreign airlines, with its flights reaching more than 140 destinations in China and more than 90 destinations overseas.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is located at the junction of Renhe town in Baiyun district and Xinhua town in Huadu district of Guangzhou, about 28 kilometers away from downtown Guangzhou.
