A fruit carnival to benefit farmers kicked off on July 8 in Guangzhou's Baiyun district and Migang village in Zhongluotan town, which is widely known for its pitaya.

Imported from Taiwan, Xixiang pitaya has a reputation for its high quality, and is certified by Migang's "one village one product" project.

To avoid using pesticides, pitaya is planted with organic fertilizers. It has a bright color, juicy pulp, a sweet flavor and is highly organic, which makes it edible for all ages, said Ye Bingquan, head of the Vegetable and Fruit Farm Cooperative in Migang village.

"We have planted 0.67 hectares of pitaya at the base along Migang Road. The harvest is estimated to weigh in at 3,500 kilograms in July while the yield will remain at about 18,750 kilograms per hectare until December," Ye said.

Pitaya can also be processed to make a variety of products such as dried pitaya, pitaya juice, and pitaya milkshakes, which are a favorite among the public.

The Honggang Art Club near the pitaya base set up new areas for outdoor camping along the river and expects to open by the end of July. Equipped with a large lawn, barbecue essentials, tents, tables and chairs, tourists are allowed to experience camping in the countryside while sampling fresh fruits.
