From March 10 to March 14, Huangpu District, Guangzhou will host the Boluodan Temple Fair at the Nanhai God Temple, Guangzhou Maritime Museum, and the surrounding venues. Nearly a hundred distinctive activities will be brought together, presenting residents and tourists with a cultural feast that can be experienced, felt, and remembered.
The Nanhai God Temple is not only one of the important birthplaces of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, but also a spiritual totem of Lingnan culture. Centered around the Nanhai God Temple, the folk custom of Boluodan (also known as Nanhai God's Birthday) has been passed down for thousands of years and was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011, becoming one of the most influential folk festivals in the Lingnan region.
The scene of previous Boluodan Temple Fair
On the first day of the temple fair on March 10, the "Bells and Drums Ring: Sea Worship and Prayer" ceremony will kick off with grand drum music and dance, reproducing the solemn scene of ancient sea worship and expressing wishes for favorable weather, peace, and security.
On March 12, two core ceremonies will be staged on the South Square of the Nanhai God Temple and Tongxin Lake. The folk-custom parades and superb performances in water and on land will fully demonstrate the vitality of Huangpu's traditions.
In addition, the temple fair will feature bazaars and food stalls. The art and culture performances in Suidong Street (穗东街道) will also liven up the festival with songs, dances, and other folk art forms, creating a joyful atmosphere where people can eat, drink, play, and celebrate all in one place.
