Expats explore Lingnan culture through special Cantonese Opera experience in Guangzhou

GD Today | Updated:2025-03-10

In March, Guangzhou is shrouded in a misty rain, creating a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Chinese opera. On the afternoon of March 4, a group of international visitors from various countries visited Yongqing Fang and the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, embarking on a journey of historical and cultural exploration and dialogue.

As the visitors stepped into Yongqing Fang, it felt as if they had traveled through time to a historical district steeped in Lingnan charm. The area preserves many traditional Xiguan Mansions, characterized by their rustic and elegant architectural style. Along the streets, arcaded buildings stand side by side, and shops bustle with activity, selling a variety of traditional handicrafts, Lingnan snacks, and modern creative products.

The visitors then arrived at the Bruce Lee Ancestral Home, a Xiguan Mansion built in the 1940s by Bruce Lee's father, the renowned Cantonese Opera actor Li Hoi-chuen. Inside, the home displays Bruce Lee's life story, movie posters, and photos. Through 3D holographic projection technology, the visitors felt as if they were communicating with Bruce Lee across time, experiencing the charm of his martial arts. During their visit, the visitors learned that Bruce Lee's martial arts philosophy is closely connected to the martial elements in Cantonese Opera. This cultural inheritance and integration deepened their understanding of Lingnan culture.

From Yongqing Fang, the visitors proceeded to the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, which features an architectural style blending the characteristics of Lingnan gardens, exuding an ancient and elegant charm. Inside the museum, the visitors were captivated by the rich Cantonese Opera culture. The museum displays historical materials, costumes, and props related to Cantonese Opera and uses multimedia to showcase its development and artistic features. Most excitingly, the museum offers Cantonese Opera costume experiences. Under the guidance of professional teachers, the visitors donned gorgeous Cantonese Opera costumes, learning basic movements and water-sleeve performances.

Gün Muhammet Baran from Turkiye dressed up as a martial character and felt like a kung fu master. "I've been studying Chinese for four years, but I never tried dressing up like this. I'll remember this feeling for a very long time," he said. This was his second visit to Yongqing Fang, but he had not realized the area's rich history until now. As a fan of Bruce Lee's movies, he was very delighted by the experience this time.

Ilayda, also from Turkiye and a student of International Economics and Trade at South China University of Technology, dressed up in the costume from the opera "Legend of the White Snake" and was very excited. In her view, Guangzhou is a modern and technologically advanced city, yet it also has many historical and cultural landmarks like Yongqing Fang.

After changing into their costumes, the visitors took to the stage to experience the singing, reciting, acting, and martial aspects of Cantonese opera. They not only felt the charm of Cantonese Opera but also gained a more intuitive understanding of the profound and extensive Lingnan culture.
