Since assuming the role of co-chair of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Asia-Pacific region and chair of the women's committee in 2019, Guangzhou has embraced its new leadership position.
By leveraging initiatives like the Guangzhou Award and international pilot projects focusing on women's and children's healthcare, the city has facilitated exchanges and cooperation in the realm of women's and children's welfare with member cities in the Asia-Pacific region. This has aided local governments in implementing the United Nations sustainable development goals.
This year, within the framework of cooperation with the women's committee of the UCLG Asia-Pacific region, Guangzhou has collaborated with the secretariat to develop projects in countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthening bonds between the peoples of different countries.
In June, a collaborative effort with the secretariat led to the implementation of a pilot project for green and healthy school campuses in five primary schools in Indonesia. The project saw the introduction of healthy food options, secured clean water sources, and advocated for a healthy lifestyle among local teachers and students, garnering high praise from local educators.
In September, Guangzhou renewed its collaboration with the secretariat to launch a small playground project at a hospital in Laos. This initiative introduces a compact indoor playground where children can both learn and play, with the goal of easing medical-related stresses for ill children and safeguarding their emotional well-being.
The successful execution of a range of pilot projects underscores Guangzhou's and the UCLG's dedication to achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals. These endeavors play a vital role in fostering health and well-being, promoting gender equality, and cultivating sustainable communities. They contribute significantly to the betterment of women and children in the Asia-Pacific region and drive forward the establishment of a global community united in a common future for all of humanity.
