The closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games was held at the National Stadium in Beijing on Feb 20.
The ceremony started with a programmed lighting the emblem of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics with snowflake lanterns held by children, followed by several red ribbons flying into the National Stadium, covering the giant snowflake at the center and eventually turning it into a Chinese knot.
The Chinese knot symbolizes connection and togetherness. When athletes entered the stadium, they stepped into different circles of the Chinese knot on the ground, jumping and laughing.
The "Moment of Remembrance" is a very important part of the Olympic Games' closing ceremony, and this year had the theme "A Willow Twig," presenting the segment with Chinese characteristics.
In ancient times, when two friends parted, the traveling party would traditionally receive a willow twig as a gift. For the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, it was only fitting that the willow twig was incorporated into the ceremony as the athletes departed to their respective countries.
The Olympic flame for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, which has been burning in the National Stadium for 16 days, was extinguished at the closing ceremony.
The flame, burning in a torch placed in the middle of a giant snowflake-shaped cauldron, gradually went out while a chorus of children sang songs.
More than 2,000 athletes from all over the world attended the closing ceremony. They marched into the stadium for the closing ceremony and to bid farewell to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
The chorus of children transitioned from singing the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics' theme song, You and Me to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics' theme song Snowflake, highlighting the Chinese capital's historic achievement of being the first city to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
