The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yet-sen University in Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province, has recently completed the world's first ischemia-free heart transplant surgery.

The technique allows the heart to continue beating with continuous blood supply during the surgery.

He Xiaoshun, the vice president of the hospital, said that the ground-breaking method could protect the donor heart's function to the greatest extent, improve the effect of the transplantation and increase the survival rate of recipients.

The hospital has successfully performed ischemia-free liver transplantation in 2017 and ischemia-free kidney transplantation in 2018.
