Guangzhou has forged a friendly city relationship with Dakar, capital of Senegal, making Dakar the 51st of Guangzhou's friendly cities around the world.  

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is the African nation's hub for policy, economy, culture and transportation. Its population as of 2019 stood at around 2.73 million.

Located at the western edge of the African continent, Dakar is an important transfer station for ships travelling between Europe, South America, South Africa and North America.

Guangzhou and Dakar have established a solid foundation in friendly exchanges and organized events such as mutual communication activities and economic and trade promotion fairs.  

Dakar has also participated in the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation competition several times. It was among the winners in 2014.
