Terminal three of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is scheduled to start construction next year, Nanfang Plus reported on Dec 25.

Feng Xingxue, general manager of the Guangdong Airport Authority, said the third phase of the airport expansion project started in September.

Feng said that terminal three would apply new information technologies such as 5G, block chain, big data and artificial intelligence to offer smart services to passengers.

"For example, when a passenger enters the terminal, all the information he or she can see will be customized such as the place for the check in and the direction of the boarding gate," he said.

The airport will have five runways and two terminal areas after the construction of the third phase, allowing the airport to handle 775,000 planes, 120 million passengers and 3.8 million metric tons of cargo a year.

The airport is expected to become a hub integrating three rail transit modes -- high-speed trains, intercity railways and metro lines -- achieving efficient rail-air transportation.

The revitalized transport network will allow people to reach downtown Guangzhou and major cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area within 30 minutes, major municipal cities in Guangdong province in 60 minutes and reach capital cities in nearby provinces in 180 minutes.
