Guangzhou and George Town, Malaysia have forged friendly-city ties on Nov 11, increasing the total number of Guangzhou's friendly cities to 48.

George Town is the political, economic, and cultural center of the State of Penang, as well as its capital city. It has a permanent population of around 800,000 and enjoys rich tourism cultural resources.

Guangzhou's Nansha district has signed a memorandum of cooperation on cruise tourism in August 2019 to push forward the launch of the new cruise line from George Town to Nansha.
