On Oct 8, Guangzhou's Nansha district signed a cooperation agreement with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Fok Ying Tung Research Institute to build an international smart manufacturing platform. The signing ceremony was attended by Cai Chaolin, Party chief of Nansha and Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, council chairman of HKUST.

According to the agreement, the two parties will collaborate to boost the development of the smart manufacturing industry in Guangzhou and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
In the first phase of the platform's development, the two sides will cooperate on smart molding and intelligent equipment, inviting well-known experts, scholars and enterprises from home and abroad to help to build Nansha into a top technical service platform and industrial cluster of intelligent molding. The platform will continue to promote the development and application of next-generation information technology, smart materials and green energy, while encouraging the settlement of outstanding R&D teams, experts and enterprises in the area.

The platform will also encourage the spin-off of R&D teams with technological know-how to create greater synergy with enterprises and further boost Guangzhou's intelligent manufacturing industry.
On the same day, Nansha district, Guangzhou municipal education commission, Guangzhou University, and HKUST also held talks regarding the establishment of the HKUST Nansha campus.
